- You are probably aware of the women’s suffrage movement, but did you know that women did not gain the right to vote until 1920? The chances are good that you have a relatively hazy picture of the history of this movement and its significance for women’s rights in contemporary American society. The following website will provide you with a brief history of women’s suffrage and bring the issues into perspective: http://teacher.scholastic.com/activities/suffrage/index.htm Links to an external site. After you have familiarized yourself with the contents of this site, respond to the following questions:
• Given that it has been fewer than 100 years since women gained the right to vote, are you surprised by the progress that has been made toward gender equality? If you are female, consider what it would be like to “think about what you want to be when you grow up” and confront one obstacle after another. For example, suppose you would like to be a physician: Society responds, “That door is not open...consider being a nurse.” Or, you are thinking about being a lawyer: Society responds, “Sorry...even if you manage to earn a law degree and pass the Bar, there isn’t a law firm in existence that will hire you.” Of course, these conditions were present in our society long after 1920. But, women’s suffrage was the beginning. If you are male, do you feel intimidated in any way by the women’s rights movement? Why or why not?

• Do you think a woman will be President of the United States? When do you think this will happen?
