Content: “Can a single woman over 30, who smokes too much, drinks too much, and has a tendency to say whatever comes into her mind, find her place in the world... and a man?” Bridget Jones (Renee Zellweger) is an average woman struggling against her age, her weight, her job, her lack of a man, and her many imperfections. As a New Year’s Resolution, Bridget decides to take control of her life, starting by keeping a diary in which she will always tell the complete truth. This diary takes us through each of Bridget’s quirky relationship attempts that prove hilarious and touching at the same time.
Assignment: Talk about the dilemma of being single as a cultural taboo. Is it lonely and unacceptable or perfectly fine to be single in our culture? Where does the pressure come from to be in a committed romantic relationship? Is it external, internal, familial or cultural? Is there any pressure on your particular campus to have a ‘ring by spring’ or to find your mate while in college?
