Autobiographical Essay #1 Autobiography is an important exercise in self-representation. You are deciding how you want to portray yourself to an audience. Autobiography is an important part of public discourse that you will have occasion to both read and write in and out of school. Just think of how many television shows are narrative reconstructions of famous people's lives. Even obituaries and wedding announcements are forms of autobiography. You may be asked to write autobiographies when you apply for jobs or graduate schools. Some of your college instructors may ask you to write a brief autobiography in relation to a specific subject matter like psychology, religion, music, and art. It has even become commonplace for ministers to ask couples to recall significant childhood memories of family before they marry. This assignment will involve describing places and people, constructing dialogue, and conveying the significance of your autobiographical event.
Write a 500-600 word autobiographical essay in which you discuss a particularly important person or event in your life, one about which you have strong feelings or one that you think had an important influence on shaping your personality. Avoid events that fall too easily into clichés, like graduations or birthdays. Instead, choose an occasion involving a direct confrontation with a family member or an experience that was particularly meaningful. Follow the basic structure of an essay—at least five paragraphs, including introduction and conclusion. Provide an outline. Give the essay a title. Underline your thesis sentence. Support it with the rest of your paragraphs. This should be typed, double-spaced, 12 pt. font, Times New Roman. It will be due on the date I assign, and you will be reading yours to the class.
