Also according to the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine's Health and Medicine Division Links to an external site., there are eight core functions that an EHR should be capable of performing:
1) access to health information and data
2) computerized results management
3) computerized provider order entry (CPOE)
4) computerized decision support
5) electronic communication among care partners
6) computer-based patient education
7) administrative processes and reporting such as electronic scheduling systems
8) computerized reporting and population health management
