Midterm Exam Study Help
Prepare for the midterm exam by doing the following:
· Look back at the document on realism in Module 2. You need to know 4-5 of those on the list and be able to apply those to the stories read in the first half of the course.
· Review the list of questions in Module 2 and 4.
Review the themes in Huck Finn.
· Review what happens in the stories and the assignments you did for the first four weeks.
· Review the character names in the stories and the ideas in the poems.
Learn at least ONE characteristic of MODERNISM, which is linked in Module 4. Be able to explain it, using at least one of the modern poems we read.
· Review and study all the documents linked in the Modules.
2. Prepare for your discussion questions on the test. There are three:
Your major discussion, counting 50 points requires you to apply the issues and themes given in Module 3 to the literature of the period (see below), other than The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn because you will have a different essay question on that.Take three of the themes listed below and demonstrate how each one shows up in the literature read in this half of the course. Again, be very specific using plenty of examples and details from the stories to show that you understand the idea and are familiar with the literature. You will need to refer to at least four different writers and their works. NOT HUCK FINN for an example.
The Changing Roles of Women
Oppression
Religion in American Society
Ethnic Conflict
Isolation of the Individual
A second question is on realism, the same question you had on the un-proctored test.
A third question is on the themes in the book The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn. Remember that there is a document link discussing these in Module 2.
3. Take your midterm exam. It will take you about an hour to 1.5 hours to do a good job of it, so allow yourself enough time.
