Final Exam Notes

Final Exam

The final exam will be available April 17 - 25. Remember that this is a proctored exam, so you must make an appointment if you have not already done that.

 Study for the final exam.

  1. Review all the stories and poems read since midterm; know details of the plot and  the titles and writers well enough to refer to them in the discussion or answer fill-in-the-blank.
  2. Be sure to know all the major characters of the stories and the major ideas of the poems.
  3. Study the Faulkner Notes, Hemingway Notes, Southern Women Writers, Magical Realism, and Postmodern Literature.
  4. The fill-in-the-blank and short discussion will come from material studied since midterm, but the big discussion should also include references to works studied before midterm.

The big discussion question is this:

Write an ESSAY, with an intro, body paragraphs, and conclusion, that explores how the themes below are reflected in American literature since the Civil War.

Themes:

  • changing role of women
  • religion as a social force
  • breakdown of the family
  • reaching the American dream
  • isolation of the individual
  • racial division

Use three of the themes, each in its own paragraph. Within each of the body paragraphs, refer to at least three different literary works (stories and/or poems) to demonstrate the use of that theme. So that’s 3 themes, each referring to 3 different stories and/or poems, for a total of 9 stories or poems that you use to prove the evidence of the themes in American literature. Refer to the literature studied during the whole semester for this big question.

For the short answer and short discussion, remember to study all the documents links in the modules since midterm.
