Assignment 5: Due Mar. 9

1. Read the head note for Faulkner and . Then read "A Rose for Emily” (2182). Write a paragraph character analysis of Miss Emily. Explain what emotional baggage drives her.

2. Read “Barn Burning.” Write a paragraph explaining what influence Abner Snopes has on his son Colonel Sartoris Snopes. To think about—not write about: What’s the significance of the son’s name? See Faulkner Notes. Notice also, as you read the story, all the images of metal and stiffness referring to Abner; see if you can determine why the writer used those.

3. Read the head note on Hemingway and Hemingway Notes. Then read "The Snows of Kilimanjaro" on 2205. Write a paragraph explaining what actually happens in the story.  Submit all three paragraphs in this assignment in ONE document as Assignment 5.

Discussion: Homer--Due Mar. 9. Some readers say, and the narrator suggests, that Homer Barron is gay, thus explaining why he "was not the marrying kind." Look back at Homer in the story and decide what you think. Express your opinion in Discussion 5. Worth

ESSAY: Due Mar. 23 (Critical Thinking)

1. Read and study  Writing About Literature. Study the Sample Essay.

2. Write a 600-word essay on either Abner Snopes or Emily Grierson, using one of the following thesis sentences.

Sarty Snopes is more noble than the other Snopeses.

The women in Faulkner are weak and/or pathetic.

The imagery in "Barn Burning" depicts Abner as cold and unfeeling.

Homer Barron is gay, thus unable to commit to Emily.

 Emily Grierson is insane.

DO NOT SUMMARIZE either of those stories. Your audience is this class, and we have all read the stories. So you will start with an introduction that includes a mention of the story (in quotation marks) and writer. Then, after a transition sentence, you will state one of the thesis sentences above. The the rest of the paper will be several additional paragraphs, each of which proves the thesis with direct quotations and explanations of events, in the story in which they appear, that support your thesis. (The essay will not receive a passing grade without the direct quotations. If you are not clear about what direct quotations are, please call me.) Again, don’t try to do this without studying the sample paper, unless you have done ENG 1123 recently and you wrote several papers of this kind. Remember, also, that you will need the work cited at the bottom of the paper.

3. Submit the essay through the Essay link in the Assignments tab, but it will be a TurnItIn assignment. When you click on the Essay link, you will automatically be directed to the TurnItIn program, where you will upload your essay.  You will have to spend more time than usual on this assignment/essay, but this is required. So don't skip it since the essay counts 10% of your grade, the same as the un-proctored test counted before midterm.

5. Submit by due date. This assignment will be penalized 10 points per day it is late. REMEMBER: DO NOT USE ANY OTHER sources except the stories assigned and your own brain. It would be was less costly to say something wrong than to make a zero for plagiarizing.

After the essay is graded, you will be able to view the marks and comments on the graded view.
