Attendance, Withdrawing and Notice of Absence procedures

Attendance and Participation Requirements

Attendance will be recorded beginning the first day of the course.  Hinds will count attendance for online courses once per week for 8 week and 15 week (full term) courses. Attendance for 4 week online courses is counted twice per week. The student is responsible for all work in the course. Students must participate in 80% of the activities assigned by the instructor to receive credit for the course. Student absences may be excused for legally or medically documented reasons provided to the instructor. The instructor must verify weekly attendance through content-based assignments in Hinds Canvas.

Notice of Absence Warning

Notices of absence are sent to your Hinds email by instructors when the student has become excessively absent if he or she has not provided documentation to excuse the absence. When a student has accumulated 2 absences (spring and fall terms) or 1 absence (summer or short terms) then the student will be sent a warning notification. The student has 7 full, calendar days to respond to the instructor before being dropped from the course. If the student receives an additional absence they will be dropped from the course with a "W,"  Please refer to your course syllabus for the grading scale used in your online course.

Withdrawing from Class

Students may begin withdrawing from an online course after the Add/Drop period ends. Students who withdraw from a course are still responsible for all financial obligations to the college. Hinds’ students must withdraw using MyHinds unless withdrawing from ALL courses. This process is the same as withdrawing from a face-to-face course. Students will not be allowed to withdraw from any online course once the deadline has passed. Distance Learning is not allowed to make any exceptions to this rule. The last day to withdraw can be found in your Canvas course or on the Distance Learning student guide. Students must withdraw by the last day to withdraw for that term or before the deadline set forth in the Notice of Absence issued from the instructor.

If a student is withdrawing from all of their courses, they must go through a Hinds Community College Counseling Office.
