Optional Discussion: How do you know if food molecules store energy?

Possible +5 Points will go towards Exam 1 (Midterm)

Answer the questions in your own words!

Hinds Science Standard: Students will develop an understanding of cellular respiration.  Students will understand how nutrients such as fats and proteins can be used to generate ATP for our cellular activities.

The word cellular respiration is the process by which living organisms covert the chemical energy in food to for cellular functions. This process is comparable to the production of electrical energy to run machines in your dorm room. The television can not take energy directly from coal, gasoline, or nuclear fuel. These fuels must be converted to electricity by the power plant before they can be used by your home appliances (stove, microwave, oven, even lights)

Each question is worth +1 point. Answer (5 out of 6) questions:

1. What are the differences between the aerobic and anaerobic pathways?

2. What is the role of oxygen in these pathways?

3. How are other organic nutrients, such as fats and proteins, used instead of glucose for energy?

4. Explain the role of cellular respiration in a cell?

5. State the overall reaction for glucose breakdown.

6. List the four phases of cellular respiration, and identify the location of each within the cell.
