ESSAY: Oct. 23

1. Read and study  Writing About Literature. Study the Sample Essay.

2. Write a 600-word essay on either Abner Snopes or Emily Grierson, using one of the following thesis sentences.

  •  Abner Snopes' character is defined by the images describing him.
  •  The women in Faulkner's stories are weak and/or pathetic.
  •  Harry in "Snows of Kilimanjaro" is one  of  Hemingway's "code heroes."
  •  The townspeople are fairly obvious that they do not consider Homer Barron a good match for Emily.
  •  Characters in both of Faulkner's stories represent the remnants of a decaying class system in the South.

DO NOT SUMMARIZE either of those stories. Your audience is this class, and we have all read the stories. So you will start with an introduction that includes a mention of the story (in quotation marks) and writer. Then, after a transition sentence, you will state one of the thesis sentences above. The rest of the paper will be several additional paragraphs, each of which proves the thesis with direct quotations and explanations of events, in the story in which they appear, that support your thesis. (The essay will not receive a passing grade without the direct quotations. If you are not clear about what direct quotations are, please call me.) Again, don’t try to do this without studying the sample paper, unless you have done ENG 1123 recently and you wrote several papers of this kind. Remember, also, that you will need the work cited at the bottom of the paper.

3. Submit the essay through the Essay link in the Assignments tab, but it will be a TurnItIn assignment. When you click on the Essay link, you will upload your paper in Turnitin.  You will have to spend more time than usual on this assignment/essay, but this is required. So don't skip it since the essay counts 10% of your grade.

5. Submit by due date. This assignment will be penalized 10 points per day it is late. REMEMBER: DO NOT USE ANY OTHER sources except the stories assigned and your own brain. It would be less costly to say something wrong than to make a zero for plagiarizing.

After the essay is graded, you will be able to view the marks and comments on the graded view.
