OUTCOMES:
- Students will be familiar with the major events and movements of the historical period corresponding to the published works of writers studied.
- Students will understand the major plot and/or ideas of the assigned works of Faulkner and Hemingway.
- Students will explore and analyze the subtle motivations of the characters in the assigned works.
- Students will examine and apply the major themes discussed in this unit and be able to explain how these themes are demonstrated in the works assigned.
- Students will demonstrate an ability to think critically about the characters through the assigned essay.
- Students will be familiar with the information in the linked documents on Faulkner, Hemingway, and the sample essay.
Assignments include
- reading the historical introductory material in the text book,
- reading all the documents linked in the module
- reading selections from the works of Faulkner and Hemingway, as well as the linked documents about them
Assessments include one written assignment and one discussion post.
Assignment 6: Due Oct. 16
1. Read the head note for Faulkner. Then read "A Rose for Emily” (994) . Write a paragraph explaining what you think was wrong with Miss Emily. Be very specific, and use at least two direct quotations in your paragraph that demonstrate your topic sentence.
2. Read “Barn Burning.” Write a paragraph that explains the metallic imagery (tin, cold, etc.) in the story as it relates to Abner Snopes. Use at least two direct quotations to support your topic sentence, and explain the connect to Abner. To think about—not write about: What’s the significance of the son’s name? See Faulkner Notes.
3. Read the head note on Hemingway and Hemingway Notes. Then read "The Snows of Kilimanjaro" on 1021 Write a paragraph that analyzes Harry. Use two direct quotations that show what you think is his driving force. Submit all three paragraphs in this assignment in ONE document as Assignment 6.
