OUTCOMES

Students should

  1. recognize grotesque humor in literature
  2. be familiar with the plots and characters of assigned work of Twain and Harte
  3. recognize and explain the major themes in The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn with examples from the novel
  4. know Mark Twain's concept of "silent lies" discussed in the YouTube video assigned below.

Assignments include:

  1. reading the link on naturalism and the linked document on themes in Huck Finn below
  2. reading selections from The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, "The Notorious Jumping Frog" and "An Occurrence at Owl Creek Bridge"
  3. viewing the video of Mark Twain's (enacted) discussion of "silent lies."

Assessments include one assignment.

Assignment 2: Due Sept. 4

  1.  Read Mark Twain’s head note and then “The Notorious Jumping Frog of Calaveras County,” p. 98. Write a paragraph explaining the extent of Jim Smiley's gambling addiction.
  2. Read the first FIVE chapters of Mark Twain’s masterpiece The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn on 105. You should know the basic plot of the story and the major characters:  Huck, Tom, Miss Watson, Jim, Pap, etc. I always ask you to identify characters on the quiz and final exam. Write a paragraph that explains what Huck might have had to run away from.
  3. STUDY Themes In The Adventures Of Huckleberry Finn. Those themes will be asked on the un-proctored quiz.
  4. Read the head note for Ambrose Bierce, p. 317, and “An Occurrence at Owl Creek Bridge,” p. 318 +. This is a naturalistic story. Read Naturalism for an explanation of the term. Write a  paragraph explaining WHY this story is naturalistic; you need to name two of the characteristics listed in the link above and apply them to Bierce's story to demonstrate why the story is naturalistic..

 Submit all three written parts together as one document for Asmt 2.
