If you are new to Canvas, you should watch the short video below to help familiarize you with the system.

Canvas Interface Video Links to an external site.

Here are the first things to do in the course to get started:

  1. First, click on MODULES in the tabs to the left (in the white area of this page). That is where all assignments are located, arranged by weeks and dates. Links to everything you need to read and textbook assignments are located within the weekly explanations.
  2. The other tabs to the left are the links to most of the processes that we will be doing, so please explore those now. The SmarterProctoring tab is where you will register for your three proctored tests.
  3. The menu to the far left  (courses, dashboard, inbox, etc.) contains the global navigation to all your courses, meaning that they are common to all your courses and apply to all your courses. This list is visible on all screens/pages of the course.
  4. The textbook is The Norton Anthology of American Literature, Shorter 8th Edition, Volume 2. ISBN 978-0-393-91887-8. It is required since there is no way to pass the course without doing the reading. You will not HAVE to use it for Assignment 1, due Sunday, August 28 , but you MUST have it to do Assignment 2, due Sunday September 4, since the readings are in the book. If you still do not have a book by then, you will need to Google the full text of assigned works and go from there (call me if you need help doing that).
  5. Read the Distance Learning Page in the Introduction module and  answer the short Distance Learning Orientation, which must be completed before you can progress further in the course.
  6. To more clearly understand the scope and plan of the course and what is expected, how grades are done, and other such things, read the American Literature II Syllabus--Barham. Basically, if you start work immediately and keep up with assignments, turn in all work on time, and study the assigned readings carefully, you should do well in the course.
  7. Cautions: 1. Do NOT work from the Syllabus tab since, although the assignments are all listed there, the instructions are in the MODULES, and the syllabus tab just LISTS stuff we do this semester. 2. Do not delay or mess around, thinking you can catch up. It is hard to catch up in a lit course because there is a lot of reading to do.  3. I do not give extra credit except for one question on each quiz and the final. But I do give extra help. So call me if you have questions or problems with the assignments because once the semester is over, it is over. Period.
