Fundamentals of Microbiology
|
| Lab 4: Introduction to Culturing and Aseptic Technique |
- Time Required: 60 - 90 minutes of prep time;6 days observation (3 days per experiment)
- Additional Materials: Microwave or boiling water bath

| Lab 5: Structure and Microscopy |
- Time Required: 90 minutes; 3 days incubation
- Additional Materials: Access to eScience Labs' Student Portal and isopropyl alcohol

| Lab 6: Growth of Microorganisms |
- Time Required: 60 - 90 minutes of prep time plus 4 - 6 days of observation (2-3
days per experiment)
- Additional Materials: Microwave or boiling water bath and scissors.

| Lab 7: Quantitation of Cultured Microorganisms |
- Time Required: 60 - 90 minutes of prep time; 2 - 3 days of observation
- Additional Materials: 1 tsp. soil sample and a microwave or boiling water bath

| Lab 8: Selective Media and Agar |
- Time Required: 3 - 4 hours of prep time ;1 - 2 weeks of observation

| Lab 10: Eukaryotic Microbes, Parasitology, and Viruses |

- Additional Materials: 2 slices of bread, 1 apple, 1 sharp utensil (such as a kitchen knife), 1 large mixing bowl, 1 stove or microwave, 1 saucepan (if using a stove
for a heat source), water, and isopropyl alcohol

| Lab 11: Food Microbiology |
- Time Required: 90 minutes for preparation and approximately 28 hours for observation
- Additional Materials: 946 mL (4 cups) of milk (any type), 1/2 cup yogurt, sauce pan,
mixing bowl, and a stove-top or hot-plate

| Lab 12: Environmental Microbiology and Water Quality |
- Time Required: 60 minutes for preparation ; 6 - 10 weeks for incubation
- Additional Materials: 1 tsp. soil sample, 4 - 5 cups of dirt/mud, 4 - 5 cups of water,
isopropyl alcohol, and 1 clear, empty, clear 2 liter plastic bottle
