Joel

Joel identifies himself as "Joel, the son of Pethuel." This is the only information we have about the prophet himself. It is also unclear when the book of Joel was written. Internal evidence suggests that it may have been written sometime in the fourth or fifth century BCE.

The major theme of Joel is destruction related to the Day of the LORD.

Joel begins by describing a destructive locust plague. The plague is a way to turn people's focus to the day of the LORD, and the destruction that is coming.

The whole universe is involved in the destruction: earthquake, sun & moon not shining, stars disappearing.

The people are moved to repent and gather for a solemn fast. God promises to restore his blessing to the land & his people.

On the Day of the LORD, God's judgment would come upon the nations who had oppressed Judah. Judah and Jerusalem would see unparalleled prosperity. Egypt and Edom would face drought and desolation.
