Lamentations

The fall of Jerusalem was a shattering blow to the people, who were convinced that the presence of the Temple would protect the city.

The book of Lamentations reflects the air of gloom and despair present among the Israelites after the fall of Jerusalem.  Lamentations has been called funeral songs for a dead city.  This book is only five chapters long.  It is made up of five poems that mourn the fall of Jerusalem.  Chapters 1, 2, and 4, especially, are written in such vivid language that they must have come from the pen of an eyewitness to the horrors described.  Chapters 3 and 5 may have come from the same author, but they probably were written later, when the author had the opportunity to reflect on what had happened.
